Housing, Neighborhoods and Health

In this assignment, you are asked to analyze and assess how planners have historically addressed the connections between housing, neighborhoods and health; and then to discuss how planners might do so going forward.Your paper should contain three basic components: 1) an overview of planners’ historic approach to public health; 2) a statement of the problem, as you see it (such as any weaknesses with this historic approach, blind spots in planners’ efforts, a disconnect between “planning” and “health,” etc.); and 3) a review and justification of recommendations for how you think planners might better encourage “healthy” homes and communities. (Note: You do not need to address every possible public health-related issue affecting communities with your recommendations.)This 5-page paper is meant to give you a chance to synthesize the class readings and presentations, Andrew Beck’s guest lecture, and your own research into innovative examples of work in this area. You must include at least three (3) citations from course readings and two (2) additional citations from outside research. (One of these additional citations can include direct feedback from someone involved with a project or policy response along the lines you are recommending. You are strongly encouraged to dig into innovative work currently underway.)Articles to look at:History of the Housing MovementConcentrated Poverty MattersHousing and HealthWhy Racial Disparities in Asthma Are an Urban Planning Issue
