The topic: You should choose a different topic than the one you wrote about for the midterm paper. You may again choose to expand on one of the previous writing assignments, or you may come up with your own topic, as some of you did for the mid-term paper. You may not recycle a paper you wrote for another class. You must talk with me about the topic before you begin writing. For your paper, you should consider at least one of the works we have studied this semester, and use at least two secondary sources, properly cited of course. The works we have studied include the novels, stories and poetry we watched and read, as well as the other documentary films we watched and discussed. You may also consider using works by the same authors, but you should discuss that with me first. For secondary sources, start by consulting the lists I have posted under “Files,” as well as the Library course reserves. You are of course welcome to use appropriate sources not on my lists.

. You may submit it earlier than that, but late papers will receive one letter grade reduction for each day they are late. The final paper is worth 25% of your grade for the class. It should be about 5-6 pages in length (approximately 1800 words). Word count includes bibliographic references and footnotes, both of which must be properly cited. Double-spaced, 12-point font, one inch margins.

All work on the paper must be your own. This is not a group project. You will hand in a hard copy of the paper, but to discourage plagiarism, whether accidental or deliberate, I must ask you to submit your paper electronically through Turnitin as well. You will not receive a grade for the class until you have submitted the paper via Turnitin. If I discover that you have plagiarized or cheated in any way, you will receive an F on the paper, an F in the class for the semester, and I will notify the University Disciplinary Committee, as stated in the Policy on Academic Honesty on the course syllabus. Refer again to the Writing Center website if you are unsure about what constitutes plagiarism. When in doubt, footnote! And of course, please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions about your paper topic, sources, etc.

For your information, I have posted the rubric I use when grading your final papers. You can review it, so that you have a better idea of what I am looking for.
